Introducing "The Work", in Yorkshire UK
February 22, 2026
WRITTEN BY
Nina Kelly
Recently I gave a talk about Byron Katie's "The Work" to a room full of friendly and open faces. They had come to learn about how simply QUESTIONING our troubling thoughts can free our mind.
Presenting was a great experience for me - more on that later. Many in the audience expressed enthusiastic interest and curiosity to learn about this practice they'd never done before.
Byron Katie's "The Work" (often fondly referenced simply as "TW") is a tool I had been introduced to over a decade ago, but only began using some years ago while in a parenting program with Great Parenting Simplified. It was something I'd been searching for, hungry for, and it met my need for a structured practice that could help me change the way I experienced stresses in my life. It's a tool I continue to use regularly. I love that it helps me identify the inner Judge and its thoughts, truly notice what state of mind those critical notions induce in me, and then allow myself this powerful awareness:
The difference of who I am with the painful thought, and who I am without it.
For me, doing TW is like moving energy. For twenty-two years, I was an acupuncturist in New York. While it's not exactly the same, I see and FEEL great similarities in how energy shifts and releases when doing TW - both in myself and in every person I have sat with to do this process of inquiry.
We feel less heavy, less stuck, no longer mired in the muck of the painful thoughts.
We feel lighter, more open, more curious, more conscious of new possibilities.
If you would like to learn more about doing TW, there are so many possible places to go to for information and support! One excellent option is a new online program about practicing The Work, through Great Parenting Simplified.
Perhaps you noticed that I only began using The Work after joining a GPS program. This is a key point to consider. While I had heard of Byron Katie and The Work, had even read her first book completely, the process didn't make sense to me, and doing The Work alone felt odd. I didn't really "get" what it was all about. I only felt the power of the process after committing to it for a number of weeks, working with other students and experienced facilitators, and operating within a framework that provided real experiences of what TW could do for me.
The Work is a practice. Those of us who have experienced what changes it can provide feel passionate about sharing the process with others. I hope you find a structure that helps you experience how deeply this tool can serve you in times of need.
The online Work program 'The Parenting Shift'
is starting this
March
- we'd love to see you there.
Here is more information
about this
transformational
program.
To learn more about the GPS principles I put in place in order to do my presentation, please stay tuned for Part 2 of this post. :)
